Two weeks and ten dates later–the bulk of this time consisting of long evenings spent at Kellen's place and mine–we stand next to Minnie Fish's grave, where he draws me into his arms and we share our first kiss. His touch is gentle, as if he is handling something fragile and precious. Mere words could never describe what it feels like to be wrapped in Kellen's embrace while his sensuous mouth–a mouth I've stared at for hours–passionately explores mine. He feels divine, his kiss the taste of honeysuckle, his skin the scent of cinnamon and summer. The emotional moan that escapes him at the sensation of our tongues sweeping against one another and my hands in his tousled dark waves, and then his heart-felt words of, “I love you, Sonora. You're the reason I am here,” completely shift my world, making it easy for me to respond, “I love you too.” He smiles and simply holds me close, and I think to myself, This is what you meant, Mama, ain't it? This is how it's supposed to be between two people in love. It is also during this moment that I realize the cologne he always wears matches the scent of the faceless man in my old daydreams. I know it's most likely my mind playing tricks on me, but that's okay. This is way better than the best dream.

“You are the only man I'll ever feel safe in the woods with, you know?” He draws back a little at my words.

Stupid, stupid, Sonora! I search for something to smooth over what I let slip. I'm not ready to tell him yet. One day I'll have to, but not today. “It's just that the woods aren't safe to be in alone, that's all.”

He studies me quietly and I have to look away. Then taking my face in his hands, he says, “I promise you, Sonora, I'll never let anything happen to you.”

I rest my hand against his chest, feeling sinewy muscle beneath his shirt. “I believe you.”
